iRant: Case Study: Edsamail

  • vance · 2 years ago
1.) maybe it will but still not everyone can afford a dsl.

2.) well it will be good to have support for multiple platforms

    1. Would Edsamail succeed if they launched this time around (DSL/Cable-era)?

no fucking way. If you're going to use the stupid client they gave for free. It's too ancient, web 2.0 is what's now.

    2. If you were to launch with free dial-up access, which region (area code) would you choose? What’s your target market?

majority of pinoys nowadays have DSL, there's a very small market for dial-ups.

    3. Considering point #1, would a tie-up between SMART Bro/WiFi or Globe Visibility help? How about Internet Cafes?

still none. The only reason people get edsamail before because they don't have dial-up internet or doesn't know what's internet at all before,if they have internet before im sure they're going to sign-up with hotmail, yahoo, or get a POP mail.

    4. What would be your platform, Web2.0-ish interface (you store email) or a desktop interface (temporarily store mail in a POP/IMAP mailbox)?

    web base email.

    5. If you were forced to choose the desktop interface, will a special AdSense deal increase your leverage?

AdSense? if you know how to strategically put it.

    6. How do you plan to compete against GMail? Yahoo? Hotmail/Windows Live Mail?

    don't know yet.

    7. Considering that Apple has been increasing in market share and Ubuntu’s gaining popularity, would it be worth to develop the desktop mail client for OSX and Linux?

that's why it's better it to be a web-base email more than a client-server setup

    just my 69 cents :D

You didn't get to answer all the quesetions. Your answers on points 2 and 7 are irrelevant. At point number 5, your answer is not clear.

    3.5/7, 50% lang. Bagsak ka.

ot: i remembered somebody hacking edsamail's account to be used as a dial-up account for browsing different site.
  • jploh · 2 years ago
I think that was until other sites were blocked while connected to their network. I used to browse pages while I was sending large files too. You didn't even need to hack it at that time. All you had to do was send a 1MB file to yourself and you have 30 mins of free access. Hehe

If I can remember it correctly, meron pinapalitan sa Hex nun para mag hang ang edsamail habang nag checheck ng email. free axes na! that didint last long though.

ok to answer the questions you have.

    1) Yes they could have succeeded if they stop being greedy about it. Some people are still dependent on dial up access. I know an executive who was so used to edsamail because he didint need internet access just to get his email.

    2) NCR , Baguio, Cebu,

    3) Tie up with Telco's is a great idea specially for question 2. It can accomodate all regions.

    4) retain the same client. THEN ADD A FUCKING WEB INTERFACE SO THAT YOU CAN ALSO ACCESS THE SHIT ANYWHERE ELSE

    5) adsense is worthless in dial up. Get some quality ads from local companies.

adsense for the web interface. really edsamail had a chance to make money because they have the demographics that can really entice advertisers. They just dont know anything about it kaya ganun nabulok.

    6) For filipinos by the filipinos tagline kaya nga EDSAmail eh no

    7) Do think those people who got mac and linux is still using dial up? they can access the web interface.

malaki sana ang pera dito kung hindi lang sila naging bobo

Aba! Nakakatalino pala ang pagiging CTO?! Hehe, joke lang.

Good point on #1, I also know a handful of people still on dial-up. On #4, If I remember it right, there was an almost decent web interface and even SMS alerts.

On point #7, having multiple platforms for a desktop application is no longer a big issue with wxWidgets. I was just testing who'd answer it correctly.

wxWidgets lets developers create applications for Win32, Mac OS X, GTK+, X11, Motif, WinCE, and more using one codebase. It can be used from languages such as C++, Python, Perl, and C#/.NET.

    ang tanong stable naman kaya?
  • jploh · 2 years ago
Diskarte na yun ng developer. Matagal na ang wxWidgets. Tingnan mo na lang yung ibang apps na nakalista.
  • vance · 2 years ago
it will be better for edsamail to use a web interface...... para wala ka ang iinstallin...

Yes, but how about free dial-up access? What do you think of a dialer with a built-in browser? Or a modified Firefox with a built-in dialer? Or better yet, a Firefox dialer add-on?
